The Khatib Foundation has created a legacy that extends far beyond his stateside gifts to the medical community, colleges and universities. He and Georgie by their ongoing support and involvement continue to enhance the quality of life for many in his Reza’s native homeland.
The Khatib commitments to medicine and community service for people of all faiths began almost from his birth to a religious family in October of 1930. Reza’s father, a very open-minded Clergyman at the prestigious Goharshad Mosque, guided and influenced Reza’s childhood, primary schooling and high school education, all completed at the Holy City of Mashhad in Persia.
Mashhad is a holy city due to its nature as the burial place of the Eighth Iman of the Shia Muslim faith, and it receives over 25 million pilgrims each year, many sick and indigent. Their plight kindled Reza’s desire to ease their suffering with free medical assistance and reassuring financial support, and that support has continued down through the years, closely coordinated with United States requirements.
Reza’s created the Mashhad’s Clinic and Shelter for the Poor in 2006. It has been wonderfully successful in presenting valued services to the poor patients who were the pilgrims of Imam Reza (peace be upon him) or residents of Mashhad under the good doctor’s guidance.
The clinic of Dr. Seyed Reza Khatib Charity Foundation offers services to indigent persons, pilgrims and children in need, and is supported with the cooperation of 25 physicians and paramedics.
These include cardiologists, obstetricians, gynecologists, general surgeons, ENT specialists, nephrologists, pediatricians, neurologists, ophthalmologists, dentists, and on-call physicians and general practitioners during both morning and evening shifts.
The patients referred are examined by the general practitioners and then, if needed, they will be referred to different specialists and/or to the medical centers, having contracts with us, to use the paramedical and other services, and then the necessary actions will be done at the Dr. Seyed Reza Khatib Charity Foundation’s account
As Reza and Georgie continued their lives, their empathy for those at the end of life led them to the creation of Iran's first hospice facility. It now adjoins the Khatib Clinic and School for the Indigent. Plans have been made to support both institutions in perpetuity. Both stand near the Eighth Imam shrine for pilgrims and indigents in Mashhad.
The Hospice was established as the first of its type in Mashhad. Providing medical care to help those with a terminal illness to live as well as possible for as long as possible. increasing quality of life.
Hospice Care is paliative in nature, and addresses the managing of a patient's symptoms, coordination of care, communication and decision making,it benefits the patient as well as the patient's family and friends.
